Mersey Tigers have won the BBL Championship by defeating holders Newcastle Eagles 80-75 in a pulsating encounter in the north east.
The victory over Sheffield on Tuesday had set up this game as a possible title-decider, with the Eagles knowing that they could wrestle control of the championship away from the Tigers with victory.
Nate Reinking top scored with 22 points as the Tigers ended the Eagles' run of three successive championships, and add to the BBL Trophy they picked up at the O2 Arena in March.
After a season of ups and downs, including months of struggle to find a home venue since the turn of the year, the Tigers managed to end their season with five games at the ECHO Arena, picking up five wins, including two crucial victories over Sheffield.
Although Tony Garbelotto's side slipped up against Guildford on Saturday, enabling Newcastle to claw their way back in to the race, they managed to continue their impressive form against the Eagles this season, making it five wins from seven meetings this term.
Having set out to win all four trophies available to them this season, Garbelotto's men were dealt a blow when they lost the BBL Cup Final to Sheffield in January, but have bounced back to take the next two trophies.
The final piece of silverware up for grabs is the play-off trophy, which the Tigers won last year under their previous guise as Everton Tigers. The play-offs start next weekend following the culmination of the regular season, with the Tigers likely to face Guildford or Leicester.
